Bespoke Tailoring: What is it?

The definition of the word “bespoke” comes from “bespoken”, giving the characteristic of choice. In tailoring terms, this means to design clothing from a blank canvas, the client adding her own individual choice of styling.

When it comes to clothing the bespoke tailoring service is the ultimate. There’s little that’s more satisfying than wearing clothing designed and hand crafted specifically to your body shape. It’s a vast difference from wearing an ‘off the peg’ item.

Your body is unique so consequently bespoke tailoring creates a garment specifically for you. It offers the perfect fit – the ultimate in comfort - in a style designed specially for you.

The Bespoke Process

The experience of a ‘bespoke service’

The first step in creating an item of clothing that’s going to be exclusively yours is to select the material.

In doing this we offer a sample range of materials from the world’s finest woollen and cotton mills.

After the selection of fabric, followed by making a decision on the particular style that you like, the process of designing your suit or particular item of clothing and then proceeds as follows:

  • 1. Measuring
  • We take your measurements to ensure perfect sizing.
  • 2. Drafting
  • An individual paper pattern is created showing the particular style created from your measurements.
  • 3. Cloth Cutting
  • After the paper pattern has been cut, it is then chalked around on the selected cloth and the outlay of the suit cut by hand.
  • 4. Trimming
  • Your garment is trimmed to give the suit its classic F.T. Russell silhouette.
  • 5. Assembling
  • Hand canvassing for the perfect chest drape. From here, your garment is assigned to a tailor where it is canvassed by hand and made ready for your first fitting.
  • 6. First “Basted” Fitting
  • During the first fitting your jacket will be loosely constructed “basted”. The purpose of the first fitting is for our highly trained staff to attend to alterations to suit your posture.
  • 7. Marking Up
  • The garment and paper pattern are re-marked to be returned to the tailor. After the first fitting the garment is completely taken apart, re-cut and re-assembled for the next fitting.
  • 8. Second “Forward” Fitting
  • This fitting is where our previous alterations and amendments are refined to give your suit its exceptional fit and comfort. The suit is checked over for break over your shoe, seat of trouser, drape and sleeve length.
  • 9. Hand finishing.
  • After the final alterations have been made, our tailor will hand make the buttonholes and hand finish the suit inside and out, thus giving the suit a lasting finish.
  • 10. Final Piece
  • Final fitting for perfect satisfaction.

Your F.T Russell suit is then ready for your final fitting.

We care a great deal about our creations hence you will be provided with advice on how to best care for and maintain your suit. Each suit is numbered, logged and records of your measurements kept so that additional suits made in the future can be made more efficiently.
